Fighters threw right hooks, left hooks, upper cuts and jabs to the face, all part of the 26th Annual Sigma Tau Gamma Fight Night. The event was packed full of action and "ring girls" before each round for the 500 people in attendance at the Buffalo County exhibit hall Thursday, April 2.
The Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity prepared for this annual event months in advance. Fraternity members gathered sponsorship funds from local businesses to cover some of the cost. Before each round of fighting started, lovely "ring girls" introduced the sponsors: Old Chicago, GNC, Auto Central, Wiegland Security, Hogan's Sporting Goods, Auto Central, Culvers, Holiday Inn and the Chicken Coop.
The 26th Annual Sigma Tau Gamma Fight Night featured eight fights including one female bout that was a hard-hitting fight by both contestants. The fights consisted of three rounds, each lasting two minutes. Although not every fight lasted the full length, the women fighters battled it out through all three rounds.
To keep the fighting clean and safe for the night, the Nebraska Boxing Commission was on hand officiating each fight. Officials and judges of the commission scored the matches and determined winners of each bout. The commission has kept the fights clean and safe for all 26 years of Fight Night.
Sigma Tau Gamma Clayton Kush, a junior from Platte Center majoring in sports communication, was in on all the preparations for the night. Kush said that it was well worth his time. "We were really happy with the support from students, the community and sponsors," Kush said.
All proceeds of the night went to the foundation of "Books for Kids."
"All of our fraternity brothers were proud that they could be a part of the night and to make it possible for everyone to enjoy," Kush said.
To help the fans remember the night and promote the event, the fraternity sold T-shirts and ring girl tank tops, which are still available. Anyone can purchase a Fight Night T-shirt or ring girl tank top from any Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity member or stop by the fraternity house located at 611 25th Street and 6th Avenue.
