The odds were good if you your hometown was Bayard in the 7th Annual Fun 5K Run/Walk. Ready, set, run or walk, participants decided how to experience the event put on by the Loper Programming and Activities Council (LPAC).
Some participants walked, jogged or did both. Ricky Trevino, who placed first in the overall event, decided to turn on the boosters in his shoes to make it a little warmer for him during the cold weather conditions.
Even though the weather consisted of cold winds and moisture in the air, 350 individuals competed in the Fun 5K Saturday April 25.
Trevino, a sophomore physical education major from Bayard, ran one of the fastest recorded times in Fun 5K history finishing the 3.3 mile route in 16 minutes and 7 seconds.
"This was just a good way for me to come and have a nice little workout," Trevino said.
Trevino is a member of the Loper track and field team who is redshirting this season.
In high school he placed third in the two mile at the state track meet his senior year and also placed third at the state cross-country meet. While some runners arrived at the finish line a little bit later than Trevino, he said that every runner is blessed. "When running, use the gifts that God gave to you, use every gift in every step you take."
Amy Long, a freshman majoring in athletic training who is also from Bayard, placed first overall in the female division. Long finished the route in 19 minutes and .25 seconds. Long also has a long outstanding history of running. Her senior year at the state track meet, she won the 2-mile race and also won the state cross-country meet.
"Being able to stay in shape helps everyone run better in these types of events," Long said.
LPAC members volunteered their time to register entries and help with post event activities that included snacks, hot chocolate and the awards presentation.
Awards were given to individuals for first, second and third in four divisions: male student, male non-student, female student and female non-student. Medals were awarded along with a gift bag.
Other participants selected by a random drawing took home prizes including lawn chairs, water bottles, watches, T-shirts, binoculars, a free hotel room and many more. Local businesses helped provide LPAC with the prizes for the participants.
Jami Schaffnitt, head of the Fun 5K, was very pleased with the day of running and walking.
"Despite the weather, everything still went really well. We had a great turnout and are excited to see the amazing competition this event has," Schaffnitt said. "We appreciate the Kearney Community support and are looking forward to continuing to offer this event to students/non-students next year!"
