Who is the target???

Objective: After completing this activity, student will be able to analyze their target audiences.
Materials: Some magazines
Steps:
1. Pick up one advertising in a magazine and show students it.
2. Ask them, “Why this ad is included in this magazine?”
“Why the models are all men?”
“Why this back color is yellow?”
“Why this font is small and the font is big?”
etc……
3. Discuss about those things and narrow down the target audience.
4. Make groups which have 4-5 people each, and do same things by using Ads teacher handed out randomly.
5. Each group present “who is the Ad’s target audience?” in classroom.
Result: Before creating advertisements, students have to know “who is it ads for?” And also, before learning technical things like using program to make ads, students must analyze their target audiences. Student can analyze their target audiences and go to next step.

Empathy/sympathy
OBJECTIVE: Students will develop and understanding of how to empathize with a target audience and write and present their speeches accordingly.
MATERIALS: None.
STEPS:
1. Discuss the meaning of empathy and sympathy.
2. As a class, pick a topic and write a short speech to a specific audience. Have the class put themselves in the position of the audience by considering age, sex, religious beliefs, social status and political beliefs. Have them ask themselves the question “How would I react to this speech if I were…”
3. Choose another target audience and re-write the speech so that there is better understanding and meaning for the new listeners.
4. Analyze the two versions for changes such as vocabulary and cultural differences.
RESULT: Students will pick a topic and write three one minute speeches with three different target audiences.
1. Senior citizen Republicans.
2. College students.
3. Any ethnic group.
