Help Us Understand!
Types of Visual Aides
OBJECTIVE: To inform students of the types of visual aides available, as well as help them understand which aides are appropriate for certain situations. Students will also choose the visual aides they will be using for their speeches.
MATERIALS: PowerPoint presentation including definitions and pictures of each type of visual aid being used in speeches. Handouts consisting of a list of the types of speeches in competitive speech. An outline for an imaginary informative speech.
Day 1:
STEPS:
1: Go through PowerPoint presentation with class while allowing for questions and discussion.
2: Distribute handouts to the class. Go through each type of visual aide and ask the students to write the visual aide under any type of speech it would be effectively used in.
HOMEWORK: Have the students bring an outline of their informative speech to class the next day.
Day 2:
STEPS:
1: Put outline of speech on overhead projector. Go through each section of the speech and, with the help of the class, decide on a visual aide for each section.
2: Have the students sit with their outlines and individually decide on a visual aide for each section of their speech. Walk around the class to offer assistance.
RESULT: Students will know the many different kinds of visual aides and will have an idea of what visual aides they will be using in their speeches.
