Narrowing Topics

What is my topic?

Narrowing a topic.

Objective: The student will learn the process and choose a topic for a speech or term paper by the end of class.

Materials: The student will provide a 3×5 note card.

Steps:

1. The student will put his or her name on the top left corner of their 3×5 note card.

2. List on the board:  person, place, thing, and idea/hobby.

3. Below their name on the 3×5 card, the student will then list three topics they find interesting.

4. Have them refer to the list on the board as a guide for picking their three topics.

5. After evaluating the three, based on interest level and amount of information, the student will circle one of the three topics listed on the card.  This will be their chosen subject.

6. The cards will then be handed in to be looked at by the instructor to determine if the chosen subject is worthy.

Result: Once this step is reached, the student will begin researching their chosen subject.
